Patong Beach
The busiest beach on the island and the reason people either love Phuket or avoid it. Everything is walkable, everything is open, and the water is shared with jet-skis and parasail boats for most of the day.
Patong is the beach that decides how people feel about Phuket, and the argument about it is usually conducted without either side describing it. So: three kilometres of clean shelving sand, a bay closed by hills at both ends, and behind it the densest concentration of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops in southern Thailand, including Bangla Road.
Everything is walkable. That is the case for Patong and it is a stronger one than its reputation allows, because on an island with no useful public transport, being able to eat, drink, shop and swim without arranging a car is worth a great deal.
The water, and the traffic on it
Patong shares its grid cell with Karon: 0.53m in February and 1.30m in July, which puts both in the middle of the island’s range. The beach itself shelves cleanly and the swimming is good in the dry season.
The complication is not the sea state, it is what is on top of it. Jet-skis and parasail boats work the bay through the day and the swimming areas are marked with buoys because of them, not because of currents. Stay inside the markers, and be aware that the boats do not always.
Who should not come
Anyone who wants a quiet beach, and anyone travelling with small children who wants to be able to look away from them. The sales pressure along the front is constant, the beach is crowded through the high season, and the noise from Bangla Road carries several streets.
If Patong’s convenience appeals but its volume does not, Kamala is ten minutes north over the hill and is the same idea at a fifth of the scale.
Getting here
About forty-five minutes from the airport and the easiest place on Phuket to reach late at night, which matters more than it sounds when the alternative is negotiating a fare at two in the morning.

Is Patong beach nice?+
The beach itself is genuinely good: three kilometres of clean sand on a bay closed by hills, shelving cleanly, with the same measured wave heights as Karon. What people are usually judging is the resort behind it rather than the sand in front of it.
Is Patong beach safe for swimming?+
In the dry season, inside the marked areas, yes. Its wave figures run 0.53m in February to 1.30m in July, mid-range for this coast. The buoyed swimming lanes exist because of jet-ski and parasail traffic rather than currents, and drownings on Phuket's west coast in the monsoon are a real and recurring problem.
How far is Patong from the airport?+
About forty-five minutes by road in normal traffic. It is not the closest beach to the airport, which is Nai Yang at roughly ten minutes, but it is the best connected after dark.
