Karon Beach
Three kilometres of unusually wide sand, with the squeaking white grains Phuket is known for and noticeably fewer people on them than Kata next door. The trade is that the restaurants are spread thin and the road behind is a road rather than a strip.
Karon is the beach people move to on their second trip. It is longer than Kata, considerably wider, and has noticeably fewer people on it, and the reason is not that it is worse but that its restaurants and bars are spread along a road rather than concentrated into a strip.
The sand squeaks underfoot. That is not a marketing line: the grains here are unusually rounded and uniform, and walking on dry Karon sand makes an audible noise that Patong’s does not.
What the numbers say
Karon shares a grid cell with Patong, so the two carry identical wave figures: 0.53m in February, 1.30m in July. They sit in the middle of the island’s range, calmer than Kata and Nai Harn to the south and rougher than Kamala, Bang Tao and the northern beaches.
The width that makes Karon pleasant also makes its shore break heavier than it looks. The beach runs out shallow for a long way and then drops, and when a swell is running the water piles up on that step. This is the single most common complaint about swimming here and it is a function of the profile rather than the weather.
What you give up
Choice within walking distance. The southern end near Karon circle has most of the restaurants and the rest of the three kilometres has very little, so a room at the northern end means a walk or a scooter for every meal. Check where on the beach a hotel actually sits before booking; “Karon Beach” covers a long way.
Getting here
About forty-five minutes from the airport. Kata is fifteen minutes’ walk south over the headland, and Patong is twenty minutes by road to the north.

Is Karon beach better than Kata?+
Quieter, wider and better value for the same standard of room, at the cost of having less within walking distance. They also share nothing in the way of sea conditions: Karon measures with Patong and Kata measures with Nai Harn, and Karon is the calmer of the two.
Why does the sand at Karon squeak?+
The grains are unusually rounded and uniform in size, and rubbing them against each other under a footstep produces the noise. It happens on dry sand above the tide line rather than on wet sand at the water.
Is Karon good for swimming?+
In the dry season yes, with the usual caution about the shore break. Karon shelves out a long way and then drops, so when there is swell the water breaks heavily on that step. Its measured wave height runs from 0.53m in February to 1.30m in July.
