Kata Beach
Broad, swimmable and busy without being Patong, with the island of Koh Pu sitting in the middle of the view. Enough restaurants and dive shops behind it to fill a fortnight on foot, and a low-season swell that brings surfboards out.
If someone shows you a photograph of Phuket and there is an island sitting in the middle of the bay, it is Kata and the island is Koh Pu. This is the beach the island is sold on, and for a first trip it is usually the right answer.
It is broad, it shelves gently through most of its length, it has enough restaurants and dive shops behind it to fill a fortnight without a scooter, and it is busy without being Patong. That combination is rarer on Phuket than it sounds.
The water, measured
Kata sits in the same grid cell as Nai Harn and Rawai, which means the three share their figures: 0.61m in February and 1.34m in July. That is the roughest cell on the west coast. In the dry season the difference from the calmest end of the island is about a quarter of a metre, which nobody notices; in the monsoon it is the difference between a swim and a red flag.
The southern end picks up a genuine break in the low season and the surf schools set up there from about May. That is the same swell that closes the beach to swimming, which is why the two activities happen at opposite ends of the sand.
Kata or Karon
They are next to each other, separated by a low headland, and they measure differently: Karon shares Patong’s cell at 0.53m in February against Kata’s 0.61m. In practice the difference between them is not the sea. Kata is smaller, busier and better served; Karon is longer, wider and quieter, with the restaurants spread thin. Most first visits are happier on Kata; most second visits move to Karon.
Getting here
About fifty minutes from the airport, which is one of the longer transfers on the island and worth knowing before you book a late flight. Karon is a fifteen-minute walk north along the sand.

Kata Beach FAQs
Is Kata beach good for families?+
Yes, in the dry season, and it is the usual recommendation for a first trip with children: it shelves gently through the middle, the flagged area is well used and there is food within a short walk. In the low season the southern end develops a break that is a surf spot rather than a paddling beach.
Can you surf at Kata?+
From roughly May to October, at the southern end, which is when the southwest monsoon puts a swell into the bay. Board hire and schools operate along that stretch in season. It is the same swell that raises the wave figures to 1.34m in July, so surfing season and swimming season are opposites here.
Is Kata or Patong better?+
Different questions entirely. Patong has the nightlife, the volume and the widest choice of everything; Kata has a better beach and a quieter evening. If you want to walk home from a bar at two in the morning, Patong. If you want to swim before breakfast, Kata.
