Freedom Beach

A cove under the headland south of Patong, reached only by boat or a steep path, and closed by Patong Municipality since a drowning in August 2026. What the closure is, why the sea there turns, and when it is calm.

Freedom Beach is closed. Patong Municipality shut it in August 2026 after a drowning, and on 3 September extended the closure indefinitely while officials watch the sea. When we last checked, on 13 October 2026, no reopening had been announced.

That matters more here than at most beaches, because there is no road to Freedom Beach. It is a cove of about 300 metres under the headland between Patong and Karon, reached by boat or down a steep path, so when the path is closed and the boats do not go, nobody gets there.

What happened

On 10 August 2026 a 30-year-old German visitor went into the water at Freedom Beach while red flags were already flying, and was swept away. His companion was brought out of the sea; his body was found near the rocks the following day (Thai Examiner, 17 August 2026).

The land behind the beach is a recreation forest inside a national reserved forest, so the Royal Forest Department answers for it, not a resort. The environment minister ordered it to tighten safety and to monitor sea and weather conditions before any reopening, and Patong Municipality, which runs the recreation area, said on 3 September that it would assess conditions daily and reopen only once they were safe (Rawai.com, 3 September 2026).

What the sea does here

Freedom Beach faces west into the open Andaman Sea, which is the whole explanation. The southwest monsoon arrives straight into it.

Four years of marine reanalysis put this stretch of water at 0.47 metres in April, its calmest month, and 1.30 metres in July, its roughest: the mean of each day’s highest wave. It stays under 0.6 metres in 6 months of the year and is at 0.9 metres or more in 5, May to September, with August at 1.14.

The Royal Forest Department’s own records point the same way: it names 12 to 31 August as the stretch of the year when Freedom Beach is most exposed to strong wind and heavy sea. The drowning fell two days before that window opened.

One limit, said plainly. The marine grid is about five kilometres across, and Freedom Beach falls in the same cell as Patong and Karon. The three carry identical figures by construction. What the number describes is the sea off this part of the coast, not the break on a 300-metre cove with rocks at both ends, which can be worse.

open-meteo marine reanalysis, 2022 to 2025. Modelled sea state on a grid of about five kilometres, not surf at the shoreline. Freedom Beach shares that cell with Patong and Karon, so their figures are identical by construction rather than by separate measurement.

Getting there, when it is open

By long-tail from Patong. Boats leave from the southern end of Patong beach and take about ten minutes. They are priced per boat and agreed on the sand, they run in the dry season, and in the monsoon they are limited or do not run at all.

On foot. Two paths go down from the road between Patong and Karon. The usual one takes 15 to 20 minutes and has steep stretches with ropes to hold; the other, off Patong Hill Road, is steeper and longer. Both are slippery after rain, and the way back up is the harder half (Phuket 101).

We have not published an entry fee or a boat fare. Guides give figures that disagree with each other, the beach is shut, and a price we cannot check is worse than none. We will add them when it reopens and we can.

What it is like

When it is open and the sea is down, Freedom Beach is what people hope Phuket’s beaches will be: soft sand, clear water, a wooded headland behind and no strip at all. There is a small restaurant and basic facilities, and the rocks at both ends are good for snorkelling.

The reason it is quiet is part of the problem when the sea turns. Nobody arrives by accident, and there is no road down for help either.

Instead, while it is closed

For the same kind of day, a cove with clear water and nothing behind it, Banana Beach on the northwest coast is open, has a car park, and sits on the calmer half of the island. For sand you can walk to from a room, Karon is next door and shares this sea.

In the monsoon the whole west coast takes this swell, and a red flag means the same on every beach. Every beach on the island is measured on the same scale in Phuket’s beaches, ranked by what they are for, and the month behind it is on the Phuket weather page.

Freedom Beach FAQs

Is Freedom Beach in Phuket open?+

No. Patong Municipality closed it after a German tourist drowned there on 10 August 2026, and on 3 September it extended the closure indefinitely while officials monitor the sea. We found no reopening announced when we last checked, on 13 October 2026. Check local news before you plan a day around it.

Why was Freedom Beach closed?+

A 30-year-old German visitor went into the water on 10 August 2026 while red flags were flying and was swept away; his body was found near the rocks the next day. The environment minister ordered the Royal Forest Department, which manages the land, to tighten safety and watch sea conditions before any reopening.

How do you get to Freedom Beach?+

When it is open, two ways: a long-tail from the southern end of Patong, about ten minutes across the bay, or a path down from the road between Patong and Karon that takes 15 to 20 minutes and has steep stretches with ropes. Neither has a road at the bottom. Boats run in the dry season and are limited or stop in the monsoon.

When is the best time to go to Freedom Beach?+

December to April. This stretch of sea is at its calmest from January to April and roughest in July and September on our figures, and the Royal Forest Department names 12 to 31 August as the period when the beach is most exposed to strong wind and heavy sea.
