It is also ten minutes from the airport, which makes it the most sensible beach on Phuket for a first or last night and one that a great many visitors drive past on the way somewhere louder.
The calmest water on the coast
Nai Yang shares its grid cell with Mai Khao, and together they are the calmest cell on the west coast: 0.37m in February and 1.13m in July. Against Kata and Nai Harn at the southern tip that is roughly forty per cent less wave in the dry season, in the same sea, on the same island.
The reason is geometry. The coast curves east as it runs north, so the southwest swell that hits Kata head on arrives at Nai Yang at an angle, and the cape at the northern end of the bay takes the rest. The bay is also genuinely shallow: you can wade a long way out at low tide.
Who it suits
Families, for the shallow water and the shade. Anyone with an early flight. Anyone who would rather eat at a plastic table under a pine for a fifth of the price than on a terrace. It does not suit anyone looking for nightlife, of which there is essentially none.
Getting here
Ten minutes from the airport. There is a national park entrance fee for the beach access at the northern end; the main stretch behind the restaurants is free.
