Mai Khao Beach
Phuket's longest and emptiest beach, inside the national park and directly beneath the final approach to the airport, which is why most visitors come. The sand runs unbroken for eleven kilometres with a handful of resorts set back behind the trees.
Mai Khao is eleven kilometres of sand with almost nothing on it, inside the national park, running north from the airport to the bridge onto the mainland. Most people who come here come for one reason: the aircraft that pass a few dozen metres overhead on final approach.
It is the emptiest beach on Phuket and, in the wrong conditions, the most dangerous.
Calm on the model, treacherous in the water
Mai Khao shares the island’s calmest grid cell with Nai Yang: 0.37m in February and 1.13m in July, the lowest figures on the west coast.
That number describes the sea state offshore. It does not describe the shore, and Mai Khao is the clearest example on this coast of why we publish the limits of our own measurement. The beach drops steeply close in and generates a strong pull off the sand, and people drown here. There are no lifeguards along most of its length and often nobody within shouting distance. Treat the red flags as absolute and do not swim alone.
The aircraft
Watching aircraft land over the beach is legal. It is on public land, an attempt to restrict access in 2016 did not succeed, and people gather at the southern end most afternoons to do it.
Two things are genuinely dangerous rather than dramatic. The fenced areas belong to the airport and are not part of the beach. And the noise at that distance is loud enough to damage hearing, which is a reason to stand further back than the photographs suggest.
Getting here
Five to fifteen minutes from the airport depending which end you want. There is nothing to walk to: the resorts sit back behind the treeline and the beach itself has no strip. Bring what you need.

Can you still watch planes land at Mai Khao beach?+
Yes. The beach is public land and an attempt to restrict access in 2016 did not stand. The fenced areas closer to the runway are airport property and are not open, and the noise on the approach path is loud enough to be a genuine hearing risk, so stand further back than the photographs suggest.
Is it safe to swim at Mai Khao?+
With real care, and not alone. Its measured wave height is the lowest on the west coast at 0.37m in February, but that is modelled sea state offshore rather than what happens at the sand: Mai Khao shelves steeply and pulls, there are no lifeguards along most of its eleven kilometres, and there have been drownings.
Is Mai Khao beach worth visiting?+
For the emptiness and the aircraft, yes, and it is the obvious choice for a last night before an early flight. It is the wrong choice for a whole holiday unless the resort you are in is the holiday, because there is nothing within walking distance of the sand.
