Car Hire on Koh Samui

One ring road of about fifty kilometres, and the northeast beaches are minutes from the airport. The case for a car here is not distance. It is which side of the island your days are on.

Koh Samui is a ring road of about fifty kilometres with the island inside it, and that changes the car question more than anything about the price. Nothing is far. What decides whether a car is worth having is which side of the island your days are on.

This page measures that, beach by beach, and it says something most car hire pages will not: on Samui, for most people, the right answer is a car for two or three days rather than a car for the week.

How far everything actually is

The table below is the road distance and the driving time from six beaches to six places on the island worth the drive or the transfer. The highlighted rows are the northeast coast: Chaweng, Bophut and Choeng Mon, the beaches with the most to walk to.

From the three northeast beaches, the airport and the Big Buddha are never more than 10 minutes away; Na Muang waterfall and Thong Krut pier are 22 to 32. The longest drive in the table is Lipa Noi to Samui airport, 32.1 km in about 35 minutes. Road distance and free-flow driving time from the OSRM route engine over OpenStreetMap, read on 2 October 2026: no traffic and no lights, so treat the minutes as a floor.

Read across the highlighted rows and the case makes itself. The airport, the Big Buddha and the boats to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao from Bangrak are all a few minutes from where you are staying, and a taxi does that job without a car sitting in a car park for a week. The drives are the other half of the island: Na Muang’s waterfalls inland, Thong Krut on the south coast where the boats to Pig Island leave from, and the west coast around Lipa Noi and Nathon.

Lipa Noi is the exception that proves it. Staying on the west coast, everything else on the island is a drive, the airport is on the far side of it, and a car for the whole stay is the reasonable call.

Why a few days beat a week

Since the advertised price does not separate one Thai destination from another, something else has to. We read our partner’s lowest advertised daily rate for every destination we cover on 2 October 2026, and every one of them sat between £11 and £13 a day. Samui is not cheaper or dearer to drive than Phuket, Krabi or Chiang Mai; what differs is how much use the car gets.

Where in Thailand a hire car is worth it, with the partner's lowest advertised daily rate
Destination Our verdict Why From
Koh Samui For a few days One ring road, and two or three days on it is enough. £11 /day
Phuket Worth it The island that most justifies one, and the one where the alternative is worst. £11 /day
Krabi Worth it The province is spread out, and the parts worth seeing are not the parts with buses. £13 /day
Chiang Mai For a few days Not for the city. For everything above it. £13 /day
Bangkok Probably skip it Nothing about Bangkok is improved by driving in it. £12 /day

Lowest advertised daily rate on our car-hire partner, in pounds, checked 2026-10-02 and refreshed on every deploy. It is the smallest car booked early and it is not what a week costs. Links are affiliate links; we earn a commission if you book, at no cost to you.

On Phuket the island is long and the beaches are strung down one coast with nothing useful running between them, so a car works every day. On Samui the loop is short and the northeast coast is self-contained. So book the car for the days you have planned to go south and west, a morning round the island, a waterfall and a long lunch on the far side, and let the rest of the week be the beach.

Car or scooter

The honest alternative to a hire car here is not a taxi. It is a scooter, which is on offer on every street and costs a fraction of anything else.

The WHO’s 2023 Global Status Report puts Thailand’s road traffic death rate at 25.4 per 100,000 people, ninth highest of 175 member states, and motorcycles account for the majority of it. The ring road is the island’s only through road, so everything from delivery trucks to first-time riders shares it, the roads inland to the viewpoints and waterfalls climb steeply, and the island’s wettest months, October and November, bring 270mm and 313mm of rain on our thirty-year record. A car has a roof, a seatbelt and four wheels on a wet road.

The licence question is the same everywhere in the country. Thailand recognises the International Driving Permit alongside your own licence, and a permit issued from a car-only licence does not cover a motorcycle at any engine size. Rental shops will hand over a scooter without asking; your travel insurer will ask afterwards. Our page on driving in Thailand has the licence position and the road statistics in full.

Practical notes for picking up here

Collect at the airport if your first or last day is a driving day. It is listed separately by our partner and a few minutes from the northeast beaches, so an airport pickup removes a transfer fare without adding much of a drive.

Photograph the car before you leave the desk, every panel with the desk in shot, because damage disputes on return are routine. Do not leave your passport as a deposit. Check what the waiver excludes before you sign: the standard one rarely covers tyres, glass or the underbody. And if you plan to take the car on the vehicle ferry that lands at Lipa Noi from the mainland, check first that your rental contract allows it.

Car Hire on Koh Samui FAQs

Do you need a car on Koh Samui?+

For a few days, usually not for the whole trip. From the northeast coast around Chaweng, Bophut and Choeng Mon, the airport, the Big Buddha and the piers are minutes away. The car earns its keep on the days you go south and west, to the waterfalls, the south-coast piers and the quiet west coast. Hire it for those days rather than for the week.

How much is car hire on Koh Samui?+

Our partner's lowest advertised daily rate for Koh Samui is shown on this page with the date we read it. It sits within a pound or two of every other Thai destination we cover, so the advertised floor is not a reason to choose Samui, or anywhere else, for a car. It is the smallest car, booked early, before the insurance decisions.

Can you hire a car at Samui airport?+

Yes. Samui International Airport has its own listing with our partner, and its advertised rate is shown beside the island's on this page. Collecting at the airport means no transfer fare on the day you arrive, and the airport is a few minutes from the northeast beaches.

Do I need an International Driving Permit on Koh Samui?+

Yes. Thailand recognises the International Driving Permit alongside your own licence, and your licence alone does not authorise you to drive here. A permit issued from a car-only licence does not cover a scooter at any engine size, which is the detail that catches people.

Car or scooter on Koh Samui?+

The car, for most visitors. Thailand's road death rate is 25.4 per 100,000, ninth of 175 states in the WHO's 2023 report, and motorcycles are the majority of it. The ring road is the only through road and carries everything, the roads inland climb steeply, and in October and November the rain makes both worse.
